Most of the time, you don't even miss an orchestra in Edward Auer's radiant performances of the two Chopin piano concertos. Collaborating with string quartet and bass, the pianist applies chamber-music intimacy and detail to the music without shortchanging the bravura aspects. Auer's artistry is at once lyrical and swaggering, ideal qualities for Chopin, and the teaming with the Shanghai Quartet and bassist Peter Lloyd couldn't be more congenial. Grade: A -- D.R.
